Sunrisers Hyderabad Stun Punjab Kings with Record-Breaking Chase 2k25
Hyderabad, April 12, 2025 – In a night of explosive batting and record-shattering performances, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) pulled off a stunning victory against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Chasing a formidable total of 246, SRH, spearheaded by a sensational century from Abhishek Sharma, romped home with 8 wickets to spare, leaving the Punjab Kings shell-shocked.

Coming into this match, SRH were languishing at the bottom of the IPL 2025 table, having suffered four consecutive defeats. Their aggressive batting approach, which promised much at the start of the season, had failed to deliver consistent results. On the other hand, Punjab Kings were enjoying a good run, sitting comfortably in the top half of the table with three wins in four matches. However, all pre-match predictions and head-to-head statistics, which heavily favored SRH, were about to be emphatically rewritten in a high-scoring thriller.
Punjab Kings won the toss and elected to bat first on a pitch that looked conducive to scoring. Their innings began with aggressive intent, as openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh got off to a flying start, putting on a quick 50-run partnership in just three overs – their fastest opening stand of the season. Arya was particularly destructive, smashing 36 off just 13 balls before being dismissed by Harshal Patel.
Captain Shreyas Iyer joined Prabhsimran, and the duo continued the onslaught. They guided PBKS to a blistering 89/1 at the end of the powerplay, their second-highest ever in IPL history. Prabhsimran fell for a quickfire 42 off 23 balls, becoming debutant Eshan Malinga’s maiden IPL wicket. Iyer then found a steady partner in Nehal Wadhera, and together they kept the scoreboard ticking with a mix of smart running and powerful hitting.
Shreyas Iyer reached his half-century in just 22 balls, his fastest in the IPL, showcasing his aggressive intent. However, SRH managed to claw back into the game by picking up quick wickets. Malinga struck again, dismissing Wadhera (27), followed by Harshal Patel removing Shashank Singh cheaply. Glenn Maxwell’s brief stay at the crease ended when he was also dismissed by Patel.
Despite the flurry of wickets, captain Shreyas Iyer held one end up and continued to accumulate runs. He was eventually dismissed for a brilliant 82 off just 36 balls, caught by Travis Head off the bowling of Harshal Patel. It was then that Marcus Stoinis provided the late fireworks for Punjab Kings. In a stunning display of power-hitting, Stoinis smashed an unbeaten 34 off just 11 balls, including four consecutive sixes in the final over bowled by Mohammad Shami, propelling PBKS to a formidable total of 245/6 in their 20 overs. Shami ended up with his most expensive IPL figures, conceding 75 runs without taking a wicket.
Chasing a daunting target of 246, Sunrisers Hyderabad needed a special effort from their batsmen. What followed was nothing short of a batting masterclass. The opening pair of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma came out with an aggressive mindset. They attacked the Punjab Kings bowlers from the very first over, displaying fearless strokeplay.
The duo raced to SRH’s first 50-run opening partnership of the season in just 3 overs, setting the tone for the chase. Abhishek Sharma had a stroke of luck early on when he was caught at third man off Yash Thakur, but the delivery was deemed a no-ball. This reprieve proved costly for Punjab Kings as Abhishek unleashed absolute carnage.
SRH reached 83/0 by the end of the powerplay, with both openers in scintillating form. Abhishek Sharma reached his fastest IPL half-century in just 19 balls – the quickest ever by a Sunrisers Hyderabad batter. Travis Head was not far behind, reaching his second half-century of the season with two towering sixes off Glenn Maxwell.
Their opening partnership swelled to a record-breaking 171 runs – the highest of IPL 2025 so far – before Travis Head was finally dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal for a blistering 66 off 37 balls, which included 9 fours and 3 sixes.
However, Abhishek Sharma was in a league of his own. He continued his assault on the Punjab Kings bowlers, reaching his maiden IPL century in just 40 balls – the fastest century at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium and the fastest ever against Punjab Kings. His innings was a blend of elegance and brutal power-hitting, dismantling the PBKS attack with precision.
He went on to score a sensational 141 off just 55 deliveries, studded with 14 boundaries and 10 sixes. This remarkable knock broke KL Rahul’s record for the highest score by an Indian in IPL history and became the third-highest overall individual score in the league.
Even after Head’s departure, Abhishek continued his onslaught, ensuring that the required run rate remained well within reach. Heinrich Klaasen provided valuable support with a quickfire 21 off 14 balls, while Ishan Kishan remained unbeaten on 9.
Sunrisers Hyderabad comfortably crossed the finish line in just 18.3 overs, securing a memorable 8-wicket victory and scripting the highest successful run-chase in their IPL history. Abhishek Sharma was deservedly awarded the Player of the Match for his breathtaking innings.
Speaking after the match, a dejected Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer admitted that 245 was a fantastic total but credited the Sunrisers’ exceptional batting, particularly Abhishek Sharma’s brilliance. He also rued the missed catches and the injury to Lockie Ferguson, which hampered their bowling plans.
On the other hand, a jubilant Abhishek Sharma dedicated his innings to the team and the “Orange Army” (SRH fans), expressing his relief at breaking their losing streak. He also mentioned the support he received from Yuvraj Singh and Suryakumar Yadav during his lean patch.
This incredible victory will undoubtedly give Sunrisers Hyderabad a much-needed boost as they look to turn their season around. For Punjab Kings, despite a strong batting performance, their bowlers had no answers to the onslaught from Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head. They will need to regroup quickly and address their bowling concerns as the tournament progresses.
The match will be remembered for Abhishek Sharma’s record-breaking century and the sheer audacity of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s run chase, a testament to the unpredictable and exhilarating nature of the Indian Premier League.
